#028 Muscovy's Soldiers: The Emergence of the Russian Army 1462-1689
Century of the Soldier 1618-1721 №028
Format: PDF

From the Introduction:This book aims to describe and analyse the emergence of the early modern Russian army, before the military reforms introduced by Tsar Peter the Great around the turn of the eighteenth century brought it fully in line with developments in Western Europe.
It will show that Tsar Peter’s reforms, although decisive, rested on a legacy of previous reforms, beginning with those of Tsar Ivan IV, known in English as ‘the Terrible’. Yet, the origin of the early modern Russian, or Muscovite, army can be found in the East, not the West. Muscovy was a Christian, European principality, but it was also one of the successor states to Chinggis Khan’s Mongol empire.
